While installing some software over the weekend, I noticed my computer was starting to run low on disk space. In my current setup, I have a 116 GB drive and it was showing that I had only 10 GB free. What in the world do I have on my computer that is taking up 100 GB, I asked. You would think being an IT guy, I would have an answer to that… nope. But where do I start to look? Is it several large files, or old software I have installed taking up space? Windows does not really have a good utility for reporting disk space usage. I thought about writing a script to give me a basic report, but figured I would check the Internet via download.com first. What I found was WinDirStat, its free and does exactly what I want. I was able to remove over 40 GB of stuff I dont need/use anymore… problem solved!

May also wantt o check out “SpaceMonger”. A single executable (free) and gives a nice graphical display similar to WinDirStat. Great tip though, by the looks of the screen shots, it appears to be more advanced than SpaceMonger. Nice thing about SpaceMonger is you can keep it on a USB drive, comes in handy when you get the “I have no idea where my hard drive space has gone”.
