Amish Friendship Bread
…and giving, and giving, and giving! Over mother’s day weekend, my mother-in-law came to visit and with her she brought a loaf of Amish Friendship Bread and a starter kit. The bread is delicious. It’s a sweet, dessert-like bread that’s great with coffee or just as a snack. The starter kit is just a 1 gallon zip lock bag labeled with a date and the words “Day 1″. The instructions for the bread seem simple enough, it’s just a set of directions broken out over 10 days. Eight of the ten days, the instructions simply read “Mush”. With such an easy “recipe” to follow, I figured I’d make the bread…after all, it is VERY yummy.
Today is day 10 for me. So I got to complete the starter, and put my two loaves of bread in the oven (Yippee!). However, after you put the loaves in the oven, you will find yourself with 4 new starters! The idea is to give 3 of your starters away (to make friends), and keep one starter for yourself. Since the starter is a secret Amish recipe, once you lose your starter, you lose the bread.
I find this whole thing very interesting. I’ve never found a “chain” food before!

I baked my loaves last night. They came out great. I gave some fresh baked bread hot out of the oven to our next door neighbor Katie. I gave her a Starter too. Glad you liked the loaves you made.

Glad to hear you are finding people to give your starters to! I think after my next cooking day, I will be really searching to find someone to give it to. I’m going to have to work at it though, because now I’m excited to try some of the other varieties!
